Hang in There!

On November 14, 2012 the Teen Council met in the library.  The members heard from Lauren, our SCA officer.  The members made "Hang in There" bookmarks and had a good time personalizing them!  They discussed the books they were reading and completed some reviews to be added to the Shelfari site.  Next month we will create t-shirt book bags: don't forget your shirt!

September Meeting

The Teen Council welcomed seventeen new members.  The group will bring t-shirts for a book bag project next month and cereal for the food pantry collection currently going on in the library.  A decision will also be made on the possibility of a community read and the group is expected to bring book suggestions to the club next month.  The club members created book thongs using yarn and beads.  This was a fun activity with a number of very interesting book marks being created!  Take a look at our video!

Welcome Back Readers!

Teen Council 2012-2013
Welcome!
Goals/Plans for the Year:
·         Libraries rock and reading is fun: this is your chance to spend some time talking about what you are reading! Take a break from the “must reads” and pick something up that is fun and entertaining!  You are amongst friends and we all want to hear about what you like to read!
·         Shelfari: It is time to top 500!!  Take a look at the virtual library shelf located on the SHS library web page.  Turn in your book reviews to Mrs. Stout and she will add them to the site.  Help make this student creation bigger and better.  This is a primo web page, created by SHS students to help other students find a great book!
·         Library Reading Celebrations:  As members of the Teen Council you are student leaders and set an example by your involvement in library programs.  That being said, you are encouraged to promote the library and participate in the reading programs.  The first reading celebration is taking place on October 31, 2012 as part of Teen Read Week.  We will be hosting a Zombie Hunters Luncheon.  We also need help with the school store and Ram Café.
·         Community Service: Currently we are collecting cereal for the Keep the Change Food Pantry in Strasburg as well as Mathew’s Food Pantry in Fort Valley.  Our goal is to collect at least 100 boxes of cereal by November 1.  Your support and help is needed with this project and all future community service projects.
·         Changes: Do you want to pick a group read?  What book would you like to read? Suggestions?
·         Book Trailers: Something to think about!  Would you like to create Animoto book trailers to share your favorite books with other students?
·         Cool ideas: www.teenreads.com
The Teen Council can be an awesome organization if the members are willing to participate, offer suggestions, and be part of the library community.

First Meeting: Wednesday, September 26 in the library at 1:00.

Stand UP

Many thanks to Bullying.org for allowing us to use their pledge. The Teen Council met on October 26 and worked on the Strasburg High School "Stand Up to Bullying" pledge. The video was a great success. The students showed conviction, compassion, and concern. We will definitely repeat the pledge each year: well done!

September 28, 2011 Meeting

We had an excellent first meeting! We had ten members meet to brain storm ideas for library activities and Channel Eight videos. The members will start with a video interview with our new assistant principal, Mrs. Rusher. The students created a list of questions for the interview. In addition, members created a list of ideas for future interviews including:
  • international students
  • new teachers
  • students who are working toward positive changes in our school
  • seniors: interview in the spring to talk about career and college plans
  • guidance dept: interview the two new members of the dept. and the counselors to see what is new and what is available in this dept.
  • student athletes
We have a great group of members, eager and anxious to support library programs and get involved with Channel Eight projects.
Morgan C. will be our Student Council Rep.

October 28, 2009 Meeting

The Teen Council met on October 28.
  • We reviewed the Shelfari site and talked about the reading celebrations. The Reading Ram Cafe Dessert Extravaganza was a huge success. Our assistant principal, Ms. Massie, did a fabulous job as a waitress. The next reading celebration has already begun: Feed the Need to Read. Students may enter the contest for every book that the read. Winning readers will be invited to a pizza party on December 9, 2009. Another component added to this latest celebration is that each time a teacher brings a class to either check out books or do research, that class will be entered into the drawing. The entire class could win a pizza party!
  • The cereal collection for the Compassion Cupboard has been a fabulous success. We collected 129 boxes of cereal to be distributed by the Compassion Cupboard in November.
  • The Council will start collecting children's books for the Northern VA Daily Holiday Book Drive.
  • The group looked at pictures of the Sunset Hills school in Strasburg. The group will work together to help create an oral history of the school for the Strasburg Museum. Interested students will start to work on a presentation and interviews. (more information to follow). This is a fabulous opportunity for the group to expand their interest in reading and local history.
  • Kaitlyn C. and Allison P. will work as co-leaders for the group.
  • The school store is selling friendship bracelets from Guatamala and the council will be promoting them.
  • Students broke into smaller groups and discussed books that they are reading. Reviews will be added to Shelfari.
  • Each group leader is in charge of adding the names of the books to their main list. At the end of the year, each group will argue for the titles that they believe deserve a TC Pick sticker.
